What Is Dual Plane Buttock Augmentation?

By: Dr. Rolando Morales

8/4/2020

Many women want to have a fuller backside, but this cannot always be achieved through diet or exercise alone. Board-certified plastic surgeon Rolando Morales can perform dual plane buttock augmentation to help patients achieve their desired proportions.

Dual plane buttock augmentation involves placing an implant in a pocket partially within the gluteus maximus muscle, and partially under the muscle fascia. We may also perform a fat transfer at the same time to further enhance the shape of the buttocks.

Who developed dual plane buttock augmentation?

Dr. Morales developed dual plane buttock augmentation and submitted an article for publication about the technique in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal. He's also shared information about this method at The Aesthetic Meeting with peers in 2019, an event organized by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). Today, many of our patients request dual plane buttock augmentation because it offers natural and aesthetically pleasing outcomes.

How is dual plane buttock augmentation performed?

Dual plane buttock augmentation is typically performed under general anesthesia at our outpatient accredited surgicenter. Dr. Morales rinses the implants with triple antibiotics and then places them in an implant pocket using a Keller Funnel. The incisions are closed and sealed using a special skin glue.

During surgery, the lower third of the implant pocket is created within the gluteus maximus muscle, while the rest of the upper pocket is under the muscle fascia. Dr. Morales takes great care to ensure that the implants are placed symmetrically and proportionately to the body.

If a fat transfer is included in the procedure, liposuction will be performed on areas with excess fat, such as the abdomen. The extracted fat will then be purified and injected around the implants to create a rounded and shapely look.

Where are the incisions done during dual plane buttock augmentation?

Dr. Morales uses a two-incision technique for dual plane buttock augmentation. They're made within the gluteal crease at the same level as the tailbone. However, some patients qualify for a one-incision option. A consultation in Houston, TX is the best way to determine if you should receive one incision or two.

What are the benefits of dual plane buttock augmentation?

There are several reasons why Morales Plastic Surgery recommends the dual plane method, including:

  • Less visible implants: Some people are worried about seeing the implant through the skin of the buttocks. Dr. Morales strategically places the implant in a way that makes it less visible.
  • Long-term results: With dual plane buttock augmentation, the implants are placed within the muscle and under the fascia. This ensures that the results last a long time.
  • Reduced risk of complications: Our placement technique reduces the risk of complications like implant displacement, which can occur with other methods.
