How Soon After Breast Augmentation Will I Know My New Bra Size?

One of the most exciting thoughts for women considering breast augmentation surgery is going shopping for new styles of clothing. When it comes to picking out new bras, however, you may need to wait a while to allow your breast implants to settle and your new bra size to be revealed. Not only that, but your bra size may not be consistent across different brands and styles — something else to keep in mind. In this blog, Houston, TX board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Rolando Morales and the expert team at Morales Plastic Surgery share advice about the best time to go bra shopping after breast augmentation surgery and why it can actually be beneficial to wait.

Breast implant volume doesn’t equal cup size

It is common for women considering breast augmentation surgery to ask what size implant equals a D-cup or another bra size. Unfortunately, there is no standard correlation between implant sizes and bra sizes. For example, a small-statured woman who chooses a 350cc implant may gain several cup sizes, while a larger woman may not see much of a bra size increase at all with a 350cc implant. And again, bra sizes vary from brand to brand and style to style, meaning there is no standard for cup sizes in general, much less as they apply to implant volume. Still, many women have an idea of their desired outcome for breast augmentation surgery, and Dr. Morales works closely with each patient to determine what implant size can best help her reach her goals.

When will I be able to tell what my new bra size is after getting implants?

For the first several weeks after breast augmentation surgery, patients can expect the following:

  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Breasts will feel hard and firm
  • Implants will be high riding (sit high on the chest)

Because of this, bras will not fit properly, and it will be difficult — if not impossible — to fully understand what your new bra size will be. Around 6 – 8 weeks after breast augmentation surgery, up to 70% of swelling should have resolved, and the breasts will begin to settle into their final position.

When should I go bra shopping after getting implants?

The earliest patients should consider shopping for a new bra after breast augmentation surgery is around the two-month mark. At this time, the majority of post-surgical swelling will have gone down. The breast implants will also descend to a more natural position on the chest wall. These changes will help bras to fit more appropriately, allowing patients to get a better sense of the “right” bra size in their favorite brands and styles. Still, try not to think too much about the cup size itself. Instead, choose a bra you like, try on several different sizes, and find the one that is most comfortable for you.
