As an award-winning bodybuilder and board-certified plastic surgeon in Houston, TX, Dr. Rolando Morales has a deep understanding of the nuances of the male anatomy and aims to help patients achieve their ideal physique through the most innovative tools and technologies available today. For men who struggle with excess breast tissue – a condition known as gynecomastia – it can be virtually impossible to get the chiseled chest they desire through diet and exercise alone. With male breast reduction, however, these men can finally show off their upper bodies with confidence and feel more masculine than ever. Here, we’ll discuss the benefits of gynecomastia surgery, how the procedure works, and whether or not you may be a candidate for surgery.

What is gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a common condition affecting men and is characterized by the presence of excess breast tissue, which can give men the appearance of having female breasts. There are two primary types of gynecomastia: glandular and fatty. In patients with glandular gynecomastia, excess glandular breast tissue – meaning true breast tissue – is present. Fatty gynecomastia, on the other hand, refers to the presence of excess fatty tissue in and around the male breast that creates the illusion of more feminine breasts. Gynecomastia can be subtle in some patients, while other men have fairly profound signs and symptoms.

How is male breast reduction surgery performed?

Whether a patient has excess breast tissue or fatty tissue in the breasts, gynecomastia surgery offers the opportunity to reduce the male breasts and achieve a flatter, more defined, more masculine chest. Following a consultation and evaluation, Dr. Morales will recommend the most appropriate approach for surgery. Depending on the patient’s anatomy, type of gynecomastia, and other factors, Dr. Morales may recommend placing the gynecomastia incision in one of these areas:

  • Around the nipple/areola
  • In the crease under the breast
  • In the underarm/axilla

In all of these scenarios, Dr. Morales will attempt to conceal the incision and resulting scar within the natural lines of the skin as fully as possible.

Using liposuction fat removal, glandular tissue excision, or a combination of both, Dr. Morales will strategically remove the excess breast tissue and fat cells to create a more masculine physique. Once Dr. Morales has ensured an optimal overall appearance and adequate symmetry, the incisions will be closed with sutures, and the patient will be placed in a compressive garment to aid in the healing process.

How will I feel after gynecomastia surgery?

Patients are typically able to return home the same day after gynecomastia surgery. Some swelling, bruising, and soreness are to be expected, but most patients feel comfortable returning to light desk work and other light activities within about 3 – 7 days. Exercise and more strenuous activities may be resumed after about 3 – 4 weeks or when cleared by Dr. Morales. Once the majority of the swelling resolves, which can take about 3 – 6 weeks, most men are thrilled with their masculine new look and feel a life-changing sense of relief and renewed self-confidence.
