How does breast augmentation work?
Because every woman’s body and goals are unique, Dr. Morales takes great care to customize each breast augmentation procedure to match the patient’s needs as an individual. Based on your desired outcome, body type, and other factors, Dr. Morales will help you make appropriate selections for your breast augmentation, including:
- Type of implant (saline, silicone gel, or form-stable silicone)
- Size of implant
- Implant profile
- Location of incision
- Whether to include a breast lift
During the procedure itself, which is performed under general anesthesia, may take up to 2-3 hours, Dr. Morales will place a strategic incision in a predetermined location, such as the inframammary crease, through which the breast implant will be inserted. If a breast lift is being performed, Dr. Morales will remove the loose skin and pull the remaining skin taut to achieve a more youthful, perky look. At the conclusion of the case, Dr. Morales will ensure the breasts look appropriate and symmetric before closing the incisions with sutures.
How long is breast augmentation recovery?
On average, patients take about 7 – 10 days off of work after breast augmentation surgery, though strenuous physical activity, exercise, and heavy lifting will be restricted for up to 4 – 6 weeks. Immediately after the procedure, patients should expect some level of discomfort, swelling, bruising, and fatigue. These symptoms can be largely relieved with prescribed medication and other recommendations from Dr. Morales, and most patients begin feeling more like themselves after just 3 – 5 days. However, it can take several weeks or months for the residual swelling after breast augmentation to resolve and for the implants to settle into their final position.
How long should I wait to wear a bra or swimsuit after getting implants?
While you may be excited to see your newly enhanced figure in a swimsuit after breast augmentation, it is important to allow your body plenty of time to heal and recover before wearing certain styles of clothing. Additionally, patients should not go swimming, use a hot tub, take a bath, or otherwise submerge their incisions before they have fully closed.
To reduce swelling and encourage proper healing, patients will need to wear a compressive medical bra around-the-clock for several weeks after surgery. After this time, Dr. Morales may clear you to wear a regular bra, though it should be soft, comfortable, and unwired, as your incisions may still be healing. Generally speaking, most patients are able to safely and comfortably resume wearing their preferred style of swimsuit or bra about 6 – 8 weeks after breast augmentation.
