What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction, also known as “lipo,” is a cosmetic body contouring procedure that removes unwanted fat deposits. The popularity of liposuction stems from its ability to deliver noticeable results where diet and exercise alone have failed. The procedure involves making small incisions through which a thin tube, or cannula, is inserted to break up and gently suction out fat deposits. This approach allows for precise sculpting of the body, resulting in a slimmer, more toned appearance.

One of the significant benefits of liposuction is that it not only melts away unwanted fat but also leaves very minimal scarring, making it an attractive option for those seeking a refined figure without the telltale signs of surgery. The ability to treat multiple areas of the body during a single session further adds to the procedure’s appeal.

What Areas Does Liposuction Treat?

Liposuction is a versatile procedure that treats multiple areas of the body in a single session:

  • Abdomen (belly pooch and
  • Thighs (saddlebags)
  • Hips (love handles)
  • Arms (bat wings)
  • Back (bra and back fat)
  • Chin (double chin)
  • Neck (turkey neck)

Whether targeting the face with neck liposuction or chin (submental liposuction), or addressing areas such as the stomach with male abdominal etching or female abdominal etching , Dr. Morales personalizes treatment to achieve your unique body goals.

Benefits of Liposuction

Liposuction offers a wide range of benefits for surgical fat removal, making it one of the most popular cosmetic procedures for achieving a more contoured and sculpted appearance.

Here’s a closer look at the key advantages of the procedure:

  • Melts Away Unwanted Fat Cells: The procedure removes stubborn fat deposits from problem areas that are resistant to diet and exercise. These fat cells are permanently removed, providing long-lasting results and a more defined body shape.
  • Improves Confidence: The physical changes achieved through liposuction lead to a significant boost in self-confidence. Patients often feel more comfortable in their own skin and are more satisfied with their appearance, which can have a positive impact on other areas of their lives.
  • Long-term Motivation for Healthy Living: Following the procedure, many patients are motivated to adopt and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Seeing the positive changes often encourages continued healthy eating and exercise habits to preserve the new body shape.
  • Achieves Results Where Diet & Exercise Fall Short: Even with a healthy lifestyle, some fat pockets are incredibly difficult to reduce. Liposuction targets these areas specifically, achieving the results that diet and exercise alone cannot.
  • Slims & Trims the Figure: By removing excess fat, liposuction slims and trims your physique, enhancing your body’s natural contours and creating a more balanced and proportional appearance.
  • Quick Recovery & Results: Liposuction typically has a relatively short recovery period, allowing patients to return to their normal activities within a few weeks. The results of the procedure are also quickly noticeable, with continued improvement as swelling subsides.
  • Very Little Scarring: The procedure involves small incisions, resulting in minimal scarring. These incisions are strategically placed in discreet locations, and over time, they fade, leaving little to no visible marks.
  • Enhanced Clothing Fit: With a slimmer and more toned body, patients often find that their clothes fit better, which further boosts their confidence and satisfaction with their new shape.
  • Customizable Treatment: Liposuction is tailored to meet individual needs and goals, allowing Dr. Morales to sculpt and contour specific areas with precision for a personalized outcome.

What Happens During Your Lipo Procedure?

At Morales Plastic Surgery, liposuction is performed with precision and care to ensure optimal results. The procedure typically takes place in our QUAD A-accredited outpatient facility under general anesthesia. However, if multiple procedures or more complex techniques are involved, Dr. Morales may recommend a brief inpatient stay to ensure a smooth recovery. The duration of the surgery depends on factors like the amount of fat being removed, the technique used, and the size of the treated area.

Liposuction Step-by-Step Overview

What sets Dr. Morales apart is his deep understanding of body contouring, allowing him to skillfully etch and sculpt target areas for beautifully defined results:

  • During the procedure, Dr. Morales makes small, discreet incisions to insert a cannula, a specialized instrument used to break up and suction out fat cells.
  • To enhance the effectiveness of the treatment and minimize discomfort, a tumescent solution containing saline and lidocaine is administered, which helps make the fat easier to remove while reducing blood loss during the procedure.
  • In addition to traditional liposuction techniques, Dr. Morales frequently utilizes VASER liposuction, a cutting-edge technology that uses ultrasound waves to break up fat more efficiently. VASER is especially effective at minimizing trauma to soft tissues, resulting in less pain, bruising, and faster recovery times. It also promotes tighter skin retraction, making it particularly valuable in revision liposuction cases, where it helps to address difficult scar tissue and dramatically restore better contours.
  • Once the fat removal is complete, the treated area is carefully bandaged, and you are taken to the recovery room to safely wake up from anesthesia, setting the stage for your new, more contoured silhouette.

Liposuction FAQs

How much fat can be removed with liposuction?

Liposuction can safely remove several liters of fat, but the exact amount depends on your anatomy and overall health. During your consultation, Dr. Morales discusses the amount of liposuction fat removal that is safe for your goals. It’s important to note that liposuction is not a weight-loss surgery. There are safety limits to the amount of fat that can be removed, and removing too much fat can result in a deflated appearance with loose skin. For optimal results, Dr. Morales recommends that you be close to your ideal weight before undergoing the procedure.

What happens to the fat removed during liposuction?

The fat removed during liposuction can be purified and used in other procedures, like fat transfer or fat grafting. This process enables Dr. Morales to repurpose the unwanted fat, adding volume to areas such as the buttocks (Brazilian butt lift) or BBL, breasts, or face. If you’re interested in using your fat for another procedure, discuss this with Dr. Morales during your consultation. Keep in mind that combining procedures may prolong your surgery time and affect recovery.

When can I resume working out after liposuction?

On average, patients require approximately 2 months of downtime before resuming their workouts. Although you may feel better sooner, postoperative swelling can persist for several months. Dr. Morales will monitor your recovery during follow-up appointments and provide personalized recommendations on when you can safely return to physical activities.

How long does lipo take?

The length of your liposuction surgery depends on the number of areas being treated and the volume of fat removed. Smaller areas, such as the chin, will take less time compared to larger areas, like the abdomen or thighs. Generally, liposuction should not exceed 3 hours.

Does lipo address cellulite and loose skin?

Liposuction specifically targets excess fat, not cellulite or loose skin. If you have loose skin, Dr. Morales may recommend combining liposuction with a procedure such as tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), or arm lift (brachioplasty), to achieve optimal results. While liposuction doesn’t treat cellulite, there are other nonsurgical or minimally invasive treatments available, such as Avéli cellulite reduction. During your consultation, be sure to discuss concerns such as loose skin and cellulite with Dr. Morales so he can create a comprehensive treatment plan that includes realistic expectations.

Will there be scars after liposuction?

Liposuction does involve making incisions, which will leave scars. However, Dr. Morales takes care to place small, discreet incisions in natural body folds or less visible areas. After surgery, our team provides instructions on how to care for your incisions to ensure they heal properly and minimize scarring.

Are the results of liposuction permanent?

Liposuction permanently removes fat cells; however, maintaining your results requires a commitment. Weight fluctuations can still occur, so it is recommended that you keep a stable weight after surgery, ideally within 5 to 10 pounds of your postsurgical weight. Pregnancy after liposuction can also affect your results, but a follow-up procedure or mommy makeover can help refresh your appearance.
